Skills: Illustration, Writing, Cross Department Collaboration
2023
Collaborated with computer science and statistics professors to write and illustrate a children's book introducing the concept of topology. Funded by a grant, the book was designed to make abstract mathematical ideas accessible and engaging for young readers through storytelling, playful visuals, and interactive elements.

The Problem
Teaching topology to children in a way that is both engaging and comprehensible required a creative approach that balanced educational value with entertainment.
The Research
I studied mathematical concepts with professors to ensure accuracy while making them digestible for young minds. Analyzed popular children's books, noting their use of engaging characters, rhymes, and interactive storytelling. Observed a strong appeal for narwhals and built-in games that encourage parent-child reading experiences.

The Solution
I used the visual of a narwhal’s tusk picking up objects to illustrate topological holes. Designed a side game to reinforce learning and encourage interaction. Incorporated rhyme and a question-based format to make the reading experience more dynamic and enjoyable.
